Quicksilver-----------------------------------
Robert Sutton was the only
child born to Keith and Ellen Sutton of Dekalb Illinois. His early childhood was
quite normal. He was small back
then, and played rough. He also was
the target of several bullies. That
was the case until shortly after his twelfth birthday.
He had skinned himself up after playing in a vacant lot coming home from
school. When he cleaned himself up,
he noticed flecks of silver in the wound. He
couldn’t get them off, so he left it alone. Later that day he noticed another spot on his arm that was
now a silver patch. What was this
stuff? It was soft like his skin. He checked the original wound and found the
whole area was a single patch of silver. Concerned that he was now
contaminated he hid the spots under his clothing. Over the next few days, the spots grew and became more
numerous. All his wounds had
healed, much faster than they should of. And
he noticed he was getting faster and stronger.
He was still afraid to tell anyone – it was both thrilling and
frightening. Then, coming home from
school he was confronted by a bully. The
bully grabbed his arm – and Robert grabbed the bully’s hand and pulled it
off – inadvertently crushing the hand and breaking the arm in one quick
maneuver. He ran home and finally
told his parents everything. They
saw to it the authorities were told about the other boy, and they took Robert in
to be examined. By now the silver
were spreading rapidly, His arms, torso, and most of his thighs transformed.
Patches were showing on his neck and his scalp was losing hair.
Within hours of getting to the hospital, Robert was totally silver and
hairless. And afterwards, Robert
quickly found out he could stretch. It
hit him like a ton of bricks with a shower of conflicting emotions – sorrow
& guilt for having hurt the bully, horror and amazement at his new
abilities, the anguish of his parents. Both school and police
officials became involved and despite the fact that Robert was the one assaulted
and had only responded in self-defense, he was made out to be the villain.
Angry parents were already petitioning the school not to allow Robert
back in, an attitude that only got worse when Robert’s condition was brought
forth. In this storm of controversy, a man from the Government came
and introduced himself to his folks. After
a long and tearful discussion with this man, his parents came back in and told
their son goodbye. He was going to
be sent away with this man – it was better that he not be here. And it might
be the only way to avoid criminal charges. They couldn’t give him the care he
needed, not now. And so Robert was brought to Project STRIKE, a U.S. Army Black Ops division, training young metas to be soldier/spies. They put him into lots of basic grade and high school classes, teaching him lots of Math, Spanish, Martial Arts, and other such things. As he grew older the classes changed, increasing in difficulty, and the training became more and more military. There was also a lot of history, but it was presented in such a way that developed Robert with a very military, very patriotic mindset. It was a very clever, very subtle form of brain washing. Over those years, he only saw his parents on a couple occasions, though he wrote them often. But they were becoming a fading memory. They were pacified by multiple reports from various Army officers praising their son. He was exposed to several other metahumans and mutants during these years, but rarely worked with them. His training was mainly as a solitary individual. It didn't stop him and others from competing. He made a few friends, but lost contact with them as the "graduated" out of the training program. As he grew up, he grew
taller, shooting up several inches in height when he was 14 years old.
The training pushed him, making him learn new and unusual ways to use his
abilities. By the time he was 18, Robert was well over 6 feet tall (without
stretching), and had learned much – He could now speak Chinese, use several
weapons, and was fairly proficient in Martial Arts.
He had also set a few records on the training grounds, especially the
obstacle course, and the track. He was sent on a few
missions – frequently he was airdropped in and glided down to the ground far
away from a target area and then traveled the rest of the way under his own
power on foot. Rescue missions,
search and destroy missions, even a few sniper missions.
He was always gung-ho, liking the fighting. But he did learn to question some of what he had been taught,
finding out different “truths” about what was actually going on.
About the time he was questioning the Project’s motives, its government
funding was yanked very abruptly. Within
a week, STRIKE HQ was disbanded and stripped of equipment. Now he’s 21 – and on
his own, looking for a new direction and purpose in his life. Because of his upbringing and appearance, Robert has not been
in public much – and has been avoiding it.
He’s thinking of a career, wondering about college, searching for other
options, but curious as to how his academic history might be represented with
STRIKE history. Without their
records, he doesn’t have much of anything on paper… Quicksilver
